COURSES OF STUDY

ACADEMIC RULES AND REGULATIONS(Revised, 2006)

FOR UNDERGRADUATE COURSES:

 

1.Patkai has now adopted semester system. There will be two semesters in every academic year, Odd and Even. Odd Semesters  ( I, III, V ) shall be from July to November and Even Semesters ( II, IV, VI ) from December to May.

2.The ratios of the Continuous Assessments and the Final (end-of-semester) Examination shall normally be 50:50, and 35:65 for B.A. & B.Sc. respectively. The for co-curricular activities either as theory or practical shall be for 100% or as decided by the departments concerned.

3. Continuous assessments for theory shall be  made on the basis of written tests (not end-of- semester examinations), assignments, quiz, viva- voce or seminars, or as prescribed by the various Boards of  Studies and approved by the Academic Council.

4.The number and nature of tests (not end-of-semester examinations), assignments, quiz, in each discipline, are as framed by the Boards of Studies, and approved by the Academic Council.

5.For B.A. and B. Com., in each semester, the marks for continous assessments, tests, assignments, quizzes, viva- voce or seminars are in the ratio of 30:10:5:5 respectively, and for B.Sc. 20: 5: 5: 5 or as may be prescribed by the respective Boards of Studies and approved by the Academic Council.

The schemes of marks distribution for Courses involving practical are as follows:

Continous Assessment :

6. The marks for every test (not semester examination), assignment, quiz,viva-voce or seminar and every other assessment shall count towards the total continuous assessment for that semester.


7. Every student is required to take the test, assignment, quiz, viva-voce or seminar in every course unless exempted for valid reasons. Any student who fails to appear in the test due to some genuine reason should always inform the Head of the Department concerned and also the Academic Dean in writing on that day itself, or not later than the next day. Re-test and other assignment shall be given to students who miss the regular ones only for valid reasons, in accordance with the following sub-rule:

a) EExemption from a Continuous Assessment will be decided by the Assessment Committee in which the Academic Dean is a member.
b) An absentee in a Continuous Assessment on medical ground will be permitted to sit for a re-assessment only on production of a valid medical certificate from the College Resident Doctor.
c) Absence from a Continuous Assessment on other grounds  such as participation in sports-meets, games, radio, T.V. and   quiz programmes, oratorical and other contents, marriage  ceremonies, funerals etc., will be judged on the merit of  each case before permission to sit for the re-assessment is  granted.
d) 
For re-assessment, a different set of question will be prepared with the pattern changed, if necessary.
e) For every continuous assessment only one re-assessment will be permitted.
f) Re-assessment should be completed as soon as possible and normally before the end of the semester.
g) Re-assesment is only in the context of continous assessment.

8. A student will be permitted to take the final (end of semester) examination, in any course, if he has put in at least 75% of attendance in that course in a semester.  Condonation for lack of attendance will be granted by the Vice Principal in accordance with the rules prescribed by the Senatus.

9. There will be one final (end-of-semester) examination of two hours duration for every course.

10. 
The Controller of Examinations  shall prepare the schedule of examinations at the end of each semester.

11. 
Each Head of Department shall have arranged for the publication of the scheme of valuation for each paper immediately after each examination.

12. The minimum mark for pass will be 35% of the aggregate marks in the end-of-semester examination.

13. The answer scripts of all the tests other than the final (end-of-semester)   examination shall be shown to the students for perusal within 10 days of the   conduct of such tests.  But it shall be returned to the teacher again.When returned, the answer scripts must be kept securely by the Head of Department.

14. A student can obtain clarification from the Controller of Examinations regarding marks in any examination.

15. Application for re-evaluation/ re-scrutiny of the marks must be addressed to the Principal/ Vice-Principal within 3 (Three) days after the declaration of the result. Students failing in more than two courses will not be allowed to apply for re-evaluation. The fee for re-evaluation shall be Rs. 150/- per course and rate of scrutiny shall be Rs. 50/- per course. The re-evaluation result shall be declared within 4 (four) days after acceptance of the application. Fees once paid shall not be refunded.

16. A candidate must pass all the courses specified by the Boards of Studies and approved by the Academic Council in order to be recommended to the University for the award of degree.

17. Repeat attempts will in no way affect the award of Division or Class.

18. Dropping of Honours course will be allowed only during the second Semester before filling up the form for the second Semester Examination i.e. September end, but in no case dropping of  honours will be allowed after the second Semester.

19. A candidate who fails in a final (end-of semester) examination can take a repeat  examination  which will be held for all  courses in the college during a special examination period in  summer (June) before the reopening of  the college, or at any time when examination for the course is  normally held  for fresh  candidates.

20. (a) A student having more than two back papers at the end of the second semester, even after a repeat exam for the first and second  semesters, (held in June of that year), will not be promoted to the third semester, but will have to start from the first semester again. Similarly, a student having more than two back papers at the end of the fourth semester, (even after a repeat exam held in June of that year for third & fourth semesters) will not be the promoted to the fifth semester.

 b. A student who is promoted to the 3rd semester with one or two back papers, but fails to pass in the 2nd  repeat exams at the end of the 4th semester, will  have to begin from the the first semester again. Similarly, a student who is promoted to the 5th semester with one or two back papers, but fails to pass in the 2nd repeat exam at the end of the 6th semester, will have to start again from the 3rd semester..
 c. A student who, at the end of the  6th semester, fails in one or two papers  (including 5th and 6th semester repeat exam) will have to appear the back papers in the next year in month of June.   
d. A student who fails to clear the 5th and 6th semester repeat exams for the second time will have to start from the 5th semester again.   

21. Repeat examinations shall not be given for more than two times.

22. There is no provision for improvement examination.

23. Examination fees for the various courses are as shown below :-

24.  Examination fee will be collected at the rates prescribed by the College in   consultation with the  Senatus.

The amount mentioned above is for one academic year (2 semesters)
For Repeat Examination the fee will be Rs. 200/- per course.

25. a.Cases of malpractice in a continuous assessment will be investigated by a Departmental Examination Committee consisting of the Head of the Department, all the members of the Department Assessment Committee and the invigilator concerned.  A student found guilty by the Committee will be awarded zero in that continuous assessment (test or assignment or quiz) only.    Further, the student will not be permitted to sit for re-assessment.

    b.Cases of malpractice in a final (end-of-semester) examination will be   investigated by a College Examination   Committee and the Head of the Department concerned. A student found guilty will be awarded zero   for all  the final examinations for which he is registered in that  semester, and must repeat each one.  All malpractice  cases whether in continuous or   final assessment may be reported  to the Principal, for further action, if necessary.

26. A student can request for remedial assistance from the college if he needs it in any course which he/she has failed.  A fee will be charged by the College for such assistance when provided.

27. Subjects offered in B.A.

B.A. (Pass and Honours): English, Economics, Education, Political science, History and Philosophy.
b.       B.A. (Pass): Music, plus two elective subjects from above.

                  
A student has to choose a minimum of three elective subjects,  apart from English and  Alternative English.                                       
                  

Subjects offered in B.Sc.

  1. (a)B.Sc. (Pass and Honours): Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics and Geology.  (b)     B.Sc. (Pass): Mathematics, plus any two from Physics, Chemistry, and Geology.
    Subjects combinations in B.Sc.

    Group A :  Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics
    Group B : Physics, Mathematics, Geology
    Group C : Chemistry, Botany, Geology
    Group D : Chemistry, Botany, Zoology


    Co / extracurricular activities
    A candidate has to offer any one of the cocurricular activities for 2 semesters ( i.e. N.S.S. , N.C.C.,  Physical Education, Choir or Musical instruments). Marks for the co-curricular activities will be awarded by the concerned coordinator through Continuous Assessment which will   be converted into grades.         Grade A   -    Excellent     -    75%  - 100%
    Grade B   -    Very good   -    60% -   74%
    Grade C   -    Good         -    45% -   59%
    Grade D   -    Fair           -     35% -  44%
     31. Minimum requirement for admission in the undergraduate Programme:

    1. Pass Course: At least 44 % aggregate in the HSSLC Examination or equivalent.
    2. Honours course: At least 50 % in the subject chosen (for Arts 50 % aggregate if the subject chosen was not taken) with 44 % aggregate in HSSLC Examination or equivalent.

28. In order to pass the degree examination a candidate shall have to obtain the following minimum marks.

a. Candidates without  Honours
         i. 35% marks in each thery examination.
        ii. 40% marks in each practical examination ( i.e. in courses involving practical the student has to  secure a   minimum of  35% in theory and 40% in practical).
        iii. A candidate securing 35% mark or more but less than 45% marks in aggregate shall be declared   to have   qualified for  the Degree as Simple Pass; a candidate securing 45% marks or more but less than 60% in aggregate  shall be placed in Second Division and candidates securing 60% marks or  more shall be placed in  the First  Division.
 b. Candidates with Honours

        i.   35% marks in each course.
        ii.  40% marks in each practical examination ( i.e. in courses involving practical the
student has to  secure a    minimum of  35% in theory and 40% in practical).
        iii. A candidate securing 35% marks or more but less than 45% marks in aggregate in the Honours courses  (including Pass course papers of the honours subject) shall be declared to have qualified  for the Degree             examination as Simple  Pass; a candidate  securing 45% marks or more but less   than 60% marks in aggregate in    the  Honours courses shall be  placed in the Second Class and  the candidates securing  60% or more in  the Honours courses in   aggregate shall be  placed in the  First Class.
 c. Distinctions
        
A candidate securing 75% or more in a particular subject shall be awarded Distinction in that  particular  subject.

A candidate securing 75% or more in the Honours subject shall be awarded Distinction with Honours in that subject                    
         


d. Award of Degree
The candidates shall be eligible to get the Degree for the respective stream taking into account their performances in all the six End Semesters Examinations. For the purpose of classification of divisions / Classes, the aggregate of the marks obtained in all the six End Semesters examinations shall be taken into account.
         
          29. In case a student fails to fulfill the attendance requirment in a semester, he/she will not be allowed to appear the End Semester Examination of that semester. However, the student will be allowed to appear the end Semester Examination of that particular semester in the end of completion of the sixth semester. 
         
          30. Provision for writing repeat examination is applicable only to the failed students, but not to the students who do not qualify for writing the Semester Examination due to non-fulfillment of the attendance requirements.
         
          31. The sixth semester students who are short of attendance requirement are not eligible for the repeat exam of that year. They have to re-register in the sixth semester again in December of that year and take the sixth semester exam in May of the next year.

EXAMINATIONS RULES AND REGULATIONS

    • Candidates are expected to be in their seats before the second bell. Questions will be distributed according to the schedule of time and when the bell rings for the distribution of Questions Papers. During the distribution of the question papers, no one should enter the exam hall. No one will be allowed to enter the hall 30 minutes after the commencement of the examination.
    • No candidate will be allowed to leave the examination hall or room till the expiry of at least half an hour after the question paper has been distributed.
    • Candidates are prohibited from taking into the Examination hall any book or portion of book or manuscript or matter of any description and from communicating to one another or copying from any person in the Examination hall.
    • Candidates for all the examination shall write their answers on both sides of the sheets of the book supplied.
    • Everyone should bring his own pen, pencil, rubber, mathematical instruments and calculators (when allowed).
    • No one should bring a mobile / cell phone into the examination hall.
    • No paper other than the question paper should be taken out from the examination hall.
    • Class, roll number, course number and subject of the paper should be clearly written on the answer book.
    • When additional paper is needed, candidate shall stand in their places and thus call attention. Tapping on the table is regarded as bad manners.
    • Results: It is the responsibility of the students to find out the result when displayed in the Notice Boards.
