STUDENT LIFE AND AFFAIRS

Discipline:

The Dean of Students and the Vice Principal are administratively responsible for all cases of student misconduct. However, hostel wardens are directly responsible for all cases of student misconduct in and around hostels. Warnings and fines are within the power of each warden though such action should be made known to the Dean of Students. Expulsion from the hostel will be the joint decision of the warden(s) concerned and the Dean of Students. Expulsion from the College will be the joint decision of the Dean of Students, the Academic Dean and the Vice Principal. However, the Principal should be kept informed of any expulsion from the hostel or College.

All College rules must be strictly adhered to. Specific College and hostel rules are made known to students at the time of admission. Some important rules are listed under behavioral standards. Each Patkai student must understand that the College reserves the right to fine, suspend or expel any student whose general conduct and influence is considered harmful or prejudicial to the best interest of the College.

Attendance:

Regular class attendance is vital to academic success. Hence, every student is required to attend a minimum of 80% of the classes held in each subject per academic session. Any student who fails to meet the minimum of 80% class attendance is liable to be detained at the selection test/promotion exam. To be sure, he or she will not be permitted to return for the next academic session.

Chapel attendance is compulsory because most of the important information is announced during the chapel. Attendance in every official program organized by the College on campus is compulsory. Attendance in Sunday worship services is compulsory for Christian students; non-Christian students are always welcome, however.

Negligence in attending academic and non-academic programs of the College will be an important factor in determining whether or not a student will be permitted to return for the second year.

Students leaving the campus before winter or summer recess without permission of the College authority will pay a fine of Rs.500/- and also forfeit hostel seats. Students who fail to return on time following winter or summer recess without legitimate reason will also pay a fine of Rs.500/-. Those students who could not return to the college on some legitimate grounds must submit their applications within 7 days of the re-opening of the college.

Students who, without any legitimate reason, fail to appear any examination conducted by the College or individual department will be fined Rs.300/-. In addition, they will not be permitted to return to the College for the next academic year.

Every hosteller is responsible for registering his or her name in the concerned warden's register before leaving as well as upon returning to the hostel. Hostellers who neglect attendance in chapel and worship services are liable to forfeit hostel seats in the next academic session.

Social Work:

Students are expected to participate in the social works at least three hours a week. Fines are imposed for absence from social work. During hot season, social work requirement will be relaxed. At present, social work entails keeping the College compound clean, particularly the hostel surroundings; weeding the College horticulture farm, fishery, etc. Patkai believes that achievement with one's hands is as much a part of education as intellectual achievement.

National Service Scheme (NSS):

Members of this social organization conduct work camps in nearby villages during the year. They are also active participants in social work on the campus.

National Cadet Corps (NCC):

The NCC imparts training in drill, weapons for civil defense, hygiene, etc. The Cadets have to compete in skeet shooting, drill, aeromodelling, cross country race, and general knowledge.

Students' Union:

Patkai considers non-formal activities outside the classroom to be an important part of education. Students are encouraged to organize cultural activities and social gatherings for folk music and dance. They are also encouraged to participate in literary pursuits such as debates, extempore speech, essay writing, recitation, elocution, reading, painting, etc. Patkai students manage and publish a Weekly Bulletin. Students are allowed a variety of opportunities to develop and promote their skills and potentialities.

Patkai recognizes the importance of maintaining good physical health to ensure proper mental and intellectual development. The College has a football (soccer) field. At present volleyball, football, badminton, basketball, cricket, table tennis, chess, carom, high jump, long jump, discuss throw and other athletic events constitute Patkai's games and sports activities. The College Students' Union organizes and conducts all these extra-curricular activities with the help of faculty and staff.

Christian Worship:

The College community meets for worship every Sunday morning. The faculty and staff meet weekly for prayer. Sunday evening services are shared among the Evangelical Student Union (EU), the Evangelical Graduate Fellowship (EGF), and the College community. There is chapel service Monday, Wednesday and Friday; attendance is required of every student. Sunday worship service attendance is compulsory for every Christian student; non-Christian students are always welcome to these services.

The Evangelical Union (E.U.):

The E.U. is a student organization affiliated to the Union of Evangelical Students of India (UESI). The goals of E.U. are evangelism, fellowship, testimony, witnessing, counseling and missions. At present, the E.U. conducts services on Saturday and Sunday nights, and they meet every Sunday morning for special prayer. They conduct camps, retreats and crusades from time to time; they visit hospitals, jail, etc. to share Christ and to pray with patients and inmates. E.U. members conduct youth camps in tribal areas during summer and winter recesses.
